What kind of metal are Plug and Play Jewelry's earrings made of?

We recommend reading the description of each item for a full breakdown of the components! In a general sense, however, any jewelry component (earrings, ear cuffs) that touch the ear are made of stainless steel. The tips on our ear plugs are made of plated brass but rarely come in contact with the ear.

Some components like charms, clips/clasps, tassels, wire, jump rings, etc. may be made with coated brass or alloy metals, but these components generally don't come into direct contact with the ear. Our jewelry is always 100% lead free.

If you have strong sensitivities to metals, feel free to reach out to us. We're happy to answer questions on specific items and we do custom orders!

What are the care instructions?

Pretty basic! The main thing to keep in mind is that you should wash these ear plugs more frequently than normal, especially light-colored plugs. Ideally, you should wash the plugs after each use. Because they dangle, they collect dust faster, and light silicone can discolor if wax or debris is left on it for extended periods of time.

To wash your ear plugs, simply use mild soap and warm running water. Be sure to dry all metal components thoroughly but gently to prevent tarnishing and discoloration.

Sterling silver components and some alloy components may tarnish over time. This is a normal reaction between the metal and oxygen, and can be wiped clean. Most discoloration can be rubbed away with a cloth alone. Silver polishes are also available, or you can mix baking soda and water into a paste and use a soft cloth to polish the metal.

Do you offer children's sizes?

We don't carry children's sizes for a few reasons. First, the Christmas tree style of our ear plugs allows the user to control how deep they insert the plug, so they work particularly well for users with small ears. I personally have tiny baby ears and usually buy small/women's/children's ear plugs, and I find this style super comfortable. Additionally, insertable ear plugs aren't recommended for very young children, as they can be inserted too far into the ear canal and cause damage. Plug & Play Jewelry is not officially recommended for children under 10 for this reason (but every parent knows their kiddo best).

Will the earrings get tangled in my hair?

This isn't a complaint we've received from any customers so far, but everyone's hair is different! If you do find your hair getting tangled in the plug when it's not in your ear, we recommend putting the plug over your ear (like a pencil) when you're not using it. If it falls, the chain will catch it! But it won't be as close to parts of your hair that are easier to tangle.

How long does it take for hearing loss to occur at an average concert or loud sporting event?

Hearing loss can start 5-15 minutes into a concert or loud sporting event, according to the CDC. If you've ever experienced ringing in your ears after an event, you've been exposed to dangerously loud noise.

One of the most frequent comments we receive is that someone's hearing is already damaged, and they see their hearing as a "lost cause." Untreated damage to your ears is associated with vertigo, balance issues, anxiety, cognitive decline and dementia later in life. While there isn't necessarily a way to reverse tinnitus, your hearing is still worth protecting!

How much do Plug and Play Jewelry's ear plugs protect my hearing/what is the NRR rating?

Our ear plugs have an NRR rating of 28dB. While it may seem intuitive to simply subtract 28 from the decibels from the decibels present in your environment (i.e. 100dB - 28dB of protection = 72dB), that isn't quite how NRR ratings work. This website does a good job of breaking down the math, but essentially, you can knock off 10dB off your environment when wearing these silicone ear plugs (i.e. 100dB - 10dB of protection = 90dB). The maximum NRR rating given to ear plugs (including custom fit) is 33dB, which provide 13dB of protection.

Do ear plugs impact sound quality?

As with any ear plug, you can expect a small loss in sound fidelity when using Plug and Play Jewelry. You may find, however, enjoying the music at a lower volume can be more pleasant than blowing out your ear drums. Other ear plugs with filters do provide clearer sound by allowing more frequencies to pass through to your ear drum. Plug & Play Jewelry prioritizes protection over sound fidelity. For context, products like Loop and Eargasm ear plugs are NRR rated for 7-27 dB of protection, P&PJ is rated for 28 dB. One pro tip: if you're worried about muffled music, try putting your ear plugs in approximately 30 minutes before the show starts. Your ears and brain will adjust to the impacted sound quality, and by the time the music starts, you'll be totally used to wearing the plugs and able to focus on the show.
